6. Clinical governance

The launch of the term clinical governance in 1998 sought to place quality at the centre of NHS reforms. The Royal College of Nursing maintains that clinical governance aims to integrate all the activities that impact on patient care into one strategy. This strategy involves improving the quality of information, promoting collaboration, team working and partnerships, as well as reducing variations in practice, and implementing evidence-based practice.

This section aims to bring together all of those key aspects and considers what they mean for a practice manager. Increasingly, the practice manager needs to understand aspects of the clinicians' work that used to be entirely in doctors' hands, while GPs need to respect the practice manager's responsibility for the outcomes of their work.
