10. Managing drugs in the practice and a dispensary

All doctors, and an increasing number of nurses, prescribe drugs and all practices buy, store and dispense drugs, albeit mostly in a small way. Drugs are an area of clinical and financial risk, and of considerable profit for dispensing practices. Investigations for fraud are common. A substantial amount of the NHS budget goes on drugs and much of it is spent wastefully, unnecessarily or dangerously. Medicines management is a growing element of the GP contract and one in which managers are increasingly likely to find themselves involved. This section gives background information for managers new to general practice and outlines good practice with regard to prescribing. These paragraphs are relevant to all practices.
